Impact of Tai-Chi on Falls Among Preclinically Disabled Older People

In a nutshell: This randomised controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of modified Sun style tai-chi on preventing falls in community-dwelling older people in Australia. The study could not support the tai-chi as a falls prevention measure among relatively well older people with modified mobility and an increased risk of disability. Low class attendance and lack of intensity of intervention may have contributed to the lack of effect.

Unobtrusive monitoring and identification of fall accidents

In a nutshell: The practical use of fall monitoring equipment is limited due to accuracy, usability, cost and the possible stigma attached to them. This paper proposes a fall sensor concept that can be embedded in the user’s footwear. It discusses algorithms, software and hardware developed. Software performance is illustrated using results of a series of functional tests, which show that the developed sensor can be used for the accurate measurement of various mobility and gait parameters and that falls are detected accurately.

Home safety, accessibility and elderly health: evidence from falls

In a nutshell: This article presents estimates of the impact of home safety and accessibility features on the prevention of serious, non-fatal falls for elderly widowed individuals. The features are not randomly assigned across homes, so the study developed an instrumental variable strategy, relying on the differential decline in the health and functional status of spouses to identify impacts. Cost–benefit estimates suggest that investments in home safety for the elderly may be as cost-effective as medical expenditures in the short-term.
